GENERAL APPROACH

What's a typical consultation like?
Every horse is unique, so no two consultations are alike. Each one is tailored to the individual horse and the particular concerns or questions related to that horse. Still, some generalizations can be made.

Healthy horse.  When the goal of the consultation is to optimize health and performance in a basically healthy horse, then the consultation might simply involve examination (or discussion*) of the horse and her environment, and evaluation of the following factors:

  • diet (basic ration, supplements)
  • daily routine
  • exercise program
  • training goals
  • dental care
  • hoof care
  • saddle fit
  • preventive healthcare (parasite control, vaccination, etc.)
  • any questions you may have that weren't covered

These consultations usually take 1 to 1-1/2 hours.

* In some cases, the horse's needs can be addressed during a phone consultation. I always prefer to examine the horse in person and view the environment in which the horse lives and works. But for clients who live a great distance away, there is much that we can accomplish by phone. I generally recommend that you discuss any changes I suggest with your primary-care veterinarian.
