When the purpose of the consultation is to address a current illness or injury, then that problem (and any related issue) is the focus of the evaluation. Even so, in almost all cases there are environmental, management, and social/psychological factors that must be considered in the horse's treatment and recovery. Thus, many of the items listed for the healthy horse are reviewed for the ill or injured horse, in the context of the current problem. The goal in these cases is to identify all of the possible factors that may be contributing to the current health problem or impeding the horse's recovery. Once we've examined all of the contributing factors, we can then devise a plan of action that is aimed at optimizing the horse's recovery. The plan might also include further diagnostic workup by your primary-care veterinarian or referral hospital. These consultations usually take 1 to 2 hours, depending on the nature of the problem and whether physical therapy is performed during that session. Physical therapy and rehabilitation. For a horse that is recovering from an illness or injury, the focus of the initial consultation is to: - determine the stage of the horse's recovery - healing/repair phase, remodeling phase, or ready for return to normal activities
- whether there are any underlying problems or contributing factors that have not been adequately addressed
- how we can optimize healing and help restore flexibility and fitness
These consultations usually take 1 to 1-1/2 hours, depending on whether physical therapy is performed during that session. Subsequent treatment sessions, if needed, usually take 1/2 to 1 hour each. (This section is continued on the next page and concludes with a summary of fees.) |
