Training/behavioral issues often have both physical and psychological factors by the time they've become an established problem. For example, the source of the horse's resistance or sour attitude may be an uncomfortable saddle, a painful mouth, sore feet, or some other source of physical discomfort. However, this "bad" behavior can become habitual, even after the physical trigger has been resolved. (Being "quick studies" when motivated by pain, horses may continue to anticipate more pain and mis-behave accordingly.) Often, by the time I am consulted, there is also a breakdown in communication between human and horse, and both are equally frustrated with the other. As discussed in the link on "prehab", these training/behavioral issues are injuries in the making. Not only do they frustrate both horse and rider, and rob riding of its joy, they limit the horse's performance and can even lead to injury. These problems need to be taken seriously.
Evaluation of these cases involves reviewing the possible physical and psychological factors that may be feeding into the problem. I rely on medical intuitive evaluation to help me understand what is bothering these horses. I find it a very useful adjunct to my experience working with horses and my training in equine sports medicine. During the consultation, I may want to see the horse being ridden if the problem is one that manifests only when the horse is under saddle. These consultations usually take 1 to 2 hours, depending on whether the horse is ridden or otherwise worked during the session. |
