Devil's Claw (Harpagophytum procumbens root) | ||
![]() | ||
This herb is anti-inflammatory in effect, but not in the way most believe (as a herbal NSAID). It acts on cell membranes, stabilizing them so that normal, healthful cellular processes, including repair, can proceed uninterrupted or uninhibited by excessive inflammation (which can cause further cell and tissue damage). In this respect, Devil's Claw is kind of like a fire marshall.
This essence moves slowly but deeply and thoroughly, spreading out from the point of entry in all directions. Relief is not instant; rather it unfolds over several hours as the essence calms things down, stabilizes damaged tissues and cells, and encourages repair to proceed.
This essence has a great work ethic: it proceeds diligently and purposefully, but with a great sense of enjoyment in its service. It loves its job!
Devil's Claw also said that it facilitates normal blood flow by unclumping blood platelets that have stuck together inappropriately (i.e. in the
absence of any damage to the lining of the blood vessels). It does not, however, interfere with cell-membrane-associated functions of white blood cells, such as engulfing and killing microbes.
Devil's Claw is not an analgesic (pain-reliever), per se. It helps relieve pain by quieting excessive inflammation and by promoting tissue repair. This essence had an important point to make about pain..
A note about pain
"Pain is not a bad thing. Some pain is necessary to ensure that the injured part is well protected as it heals. So, don't be too quick to try to get rid of the pain; it has a purpose."
