OSTEOPATHIC CARE OF THE SPINE

Abnormal tension or function in the muscles that support and move the spine causes pain and it limits spinal mobility (flexibility). Such problems are common in riding horses, although their presence may not be obvious. In many cases, the horse may simply seem stiff, resistant, uncooperative, or unable to perform certain maneuvers with the same grace and ease he once could.

I approach care of the spine (neck and back) wholistically, considering all of the physical and psychological factors that may be feeding into the persistence of tension and pain. In particular, I use gentle manual techniques that are based on osteopathic principles to "free up" areas of fixation.

On-going care of the spine also involves attention to saddle fit, proper conditioning, the horse's habitual movement patterns, and how the rider's habits of posture and movement might be contributing to the horse's discomfort and dysfunction.
