PHYSICAL THERAPY & REHABILITATION

Physical therapy is an important aspect of recovery and rehabilitation following many illnesses and injuries in horses. Not only can it aid in tissue repair, it helps ensure the best possible outcome, both functionally and cosmetically.

Regardless of the type or caliber of horse, the goal is to optimise long-term comfort and function, as dictated by the nature and severity of the illness or injury.

Phases of recovery.  Tissue repair and restoration of normal function is a continuum, with one phase flowing seamlessly into the next when all is going well. Nevertheless, it helps to separate the process into three phases:

  1. repair
  2. remodeling
  3. rehabilitation

Dividing up recovery in this way enables us to devise an appropriate treatment plan for each stage of recovery. In this way, we optimize healing and restoration of function without overloading the recovering tissues. For example, activity may be detrimental during the early repair phase, yet inactivity may be detrimental during the remodeling or rehabilitation phase.

What therapy entails.  Physical therapy includes both passive and active elements. Passive elements are those in which the patient does not actively participate, such as massage, trigger point therapy, acupressure, passive range-of-motion exercises, gentle stretches, and spinal mobilisation. Active elements are those in which the patient is asked to perform specific exercises that are aimed at restoring, maintaining, or improving function.
