EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY & SPORTS MEDICINE

Exercise Physiology
Exercise physiology is the study of the exercising body - how the various organs and systems function during exercise and recover following exercise; what their physical limits are; what happens when those limits are exceeded; how the limits can be safely extended through training; the specific effects of particular training programs; and so on.

While exercise involves or impacts virtually every system in the body, the ones most directly involved are these:

  • musculoskeletal system
  • cardiovascular system
  • respiratory system
  • blood (hematological system)

Other mechanisms that are particularly important in exercising horses are thermoregulation (heat management), fluid and electrolyte balance, and acid-base balance.

During my post-graduate training, I completed a Masters degree in equine exercise physiology, studying the causes of poor performance in racehorses and other elite athletes. The science of exercise has remained a particular interest of mine.
